Evicshen - 'Hair Birth'
Victoria Shen aka Evicshen is a Massachusetts-based sound artist, improvisational performer, and instrument-maker. Her sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Her self-built instruments are designed to electronically reproduce chaotic systems - systems which are highly sensitive to small changes in their initial parameters.
Shen's 2020 highly remarkable debut release, 'Hair Birth' aims to be experienced, and to be embodied as a living and breathing artifact; a total integration of sound and image. The album is the result of several recording sessions with Harvard’s Buchla 100 and Serge modular systems, but it's not a longplayer in its traditional sense. An earlier custom-made special edition featured a magnetic coil on the sleeve, to be used as an actual speaker (as demonstrated by Florian Cramer's 'unboxing' video below).
