In the ‘Golden Snail Opera’, which Yen-Ling Tsai made in collaboration with her colleague-anthropologist Anna Tsing, we become acquainted with the golden snails that originally came from Argentina and ended up as canned snail meat in Taiwan. People in this part of the world did not like the taste of these snails and dumped them in canals, where they soon became a threat for rice farmers. Instead of eradicating them, environmentally friendly farmers studied the snails and discovered that there were possibilities for collaborating with this ‘other species’.
